Yes, you have great reasons for supporinting the indie artists. Just like I said, since the Academy has decided to only honor movies that aren't blockbusters, let's see them put their money where their mouth is an nominate an ACTUAL indie film. That would certainly spark interest amongst the younger film buffs. Thanks for commenting!

Not being a big fan of mainstream media slightly narrows my oppinion on this subject. I think I saw 5 of the movies listed:
Benjamin Button
Tropic Thunder
The Wrestler
The Dark Knight
Wall E (I have an 11 year old son by the way)
And though I cared nothing about the awards I notice the ones that I enjoyed the most didn't take home much. I have to say even though Brad Pitt wasn't exactly himself in Benjamin Button, who else could've nailed that part any better. And I agree (though not really a Ledger fan) why not best actor. I mean he did after all fulfill every bit of the hype of that role and then some... And no Mickey Rourke, what a dissapointment. Maybe these are the reasons I mostly support up and coming and independent artists. I would also like to see a true indie film nominated for, well, anything.

I agree that Sean Penn looked great. I chose not to include the men in my best and worst dressed because the trend is becoming more relaxed for men to dress at these types of events. You can pretty much thank Peter Jackson for that, *lol*

The set definitely looked awesome, and I forgot to mention that. I figured that at 1,500+ words in this article though, I didn't need to comment on much more. Thanks for your input!

@ Ian

You're too kind! The fact that you haven't seen most of these films put you in good company with us in the states. A lot of people had never heard of Slumdog Millionare until it was nominated. I'm not saying that it shouldn't have been nominated, but if the Academy is going to continue to nominate the opposite of blockbusters, I'd like to see them put their money where their mouth is and nominate a TRUE indie film, made for $1000 or less!

I know people are divided over The Dark Knight's quality, but as popular as the film was, I think it deserved more than what it got at the event. At the very least, they could have let it take home "Best Cinematography"

Trey

How could you not write about the Oscars? Glad you did, entertaining and informative as ever. As I've hardly seen any of the films mentioned (you know, in Europe we get most films released much later than in USA .. not always, but usually).

For sure, films are a matter of taste and I may be in the minority here, but I didn't rate Dark Knight! Heath Ledger was good, for sure, but I thought the film as a whole was a bit of a mess and too long. Oh well .. can't please everyone I suppose.

I love to play the best and worst dressed game during the Oscars. Best - Marion Cotillard - Sean Penn. Worst Sophia Loren- Seymore Hoffman.

I loved the set this year! The changing curtains. The changing colors of the over all set. The back drop with the moving dots was fabulous. It was the best set I have seen.

Like you said you invite Bill Maher you get Bill Maher.

I wasn't crazy about the nominees either. It's obvious that the Academy has some kind of agenda. The debate comes into play over what the agenda is. The Dark Knight should have done better, for example.

As far as Bill Maher goes, yeah... whether you agree or disagree with him, that was NOT the time and place for his comment. Now, if his movie, "Religulous" had won an award, that would have been a better time to make that comment, but what he said was out of line.

I wasn't crazy about the movies nominated this year, but it's what it is. I thought this was one of the best designed Oscars (since I've been watching). They had some technical glitches, but that is live TV for you. Bill Maher is an ass. He had no business presenting.
