Did you hear that slamming noise? That must have been the sound of your mind being closed. I honestly don’t expect a positive reaction from this article, but this is a band that truly fascinates me. I don’t think that I know of any other band that is so loved and hated at the same time. I’m also unaware of any band that has fought more of an uphill battle to succeed. I hope that if you choose to follow me in this discussion, that you will proceed with an open mind. I’ve seen discussions about ICP get really heated really fast, so try to leave your emotions out of it.
Proceed Only With An Open Mind
|
|
As the self proclaimed “Most Hated Band In The World”, they seem to feed off of the hatred that comes their way. After all, we’re talking about a band who purchased advertising time on MTV, just so that they could announce with pride about their notable absence from the music video rotation. I’m not going to go too much into detail about Insane Clown Posse’s nearly two decade long career. Quite frankly there’s just way too much information, and you, the reader, probably already know about it, or would get bored reading it, so I’m only going to touch on the key points here. |
Subject Matter
The thing about ICP is that they are storytellers, more so than they are musicians, and they tap into the very basic emotions that make us human. Anger, Fear, Lust, Faith, the acts of rebellion and anti-authority.
Anger: Songs about enacting violence against other people. We’ve all wanted to hurt another person before. By listening to the violence in music form, the listener is able to have a non violent release.
Fear: There’s also the other angle of violence. A lot of their music puts the listener in the point of view of someone in a horror movie. Subject matter ranging from homicidal boogiemen to horrible thunderstorms help to please those people who enjoy being scared.
Lust: Just about every single ICP album has at least one song that glorifies sex. Say what you want, but sex sells, and it’s because it’s a subject that everyone has an emotional response to.
Faith: Arguably the strongest component of their music, ICP has made a career out of introducing the concept of faith to an entire generation of young people. Faith is a very basic factor of the human mind, and they have plenty of themes and songs about it.
But Why Do People Hate Them?
ICP’s subject matter is among some of the most complex in the entire industry. Sometimes it amazes me how many people hate them. My theory is that the people who hate Insane Clown Posse tend to fall into one of two groups,
- The first of which refuse to accept such simple concepts, and dismiss ICP as music for people of low intelligence.
- The second group of haters is the one who are turned off by their musical skills, or lack thereof. Even some of the most dedicated of juggalos (ICP fans) will admit that ICP’s strong points are not their musical talents.
The fact that two so called “talentless” dudes with marginal talent can go on to generate multiple gold and platinum albums and sell out venues coast to coast, may not sit well with some people who are stuck in a 9 to 5 job that they hate. Not to mention that this hate is usually magnified when these people are, themselves, struggling artists.
You Can Learn From Their Success!
|
It’s this success that I want you to focus on. ICP has always fought an uphill battle. Starting out in 1990, before it was “okay” to be a white rapper, they were told that in order to be successful, they needed to lose the face paint and the violent lyrics. After selling a million copies of their album “The Great Milenko But it can. The number one reason for ICP’s success was their determination to succeed. They simply made failure out to NOT be an option. Because no record label would sign them, they created their own label, Psychopathic Records. They woke up every single day, and made their career the most important thing in the world. They got out there, and handed out flyers and demo tapes left and right. They went and personally earned each and every fan that they had, and sold out local theaters, eventually attracting the attention of a few record labels. You Can Learn From Their Work Ethic Too!Another thing to note is their work ethic. Since 1992, they have put out, at the very least, one album a year. This is in addition to countless side projects, movies, singles, collaborations, and launching the careers of Twiztid, Blaze Ya Dead Homie, Anybody Killa, Axe Murder Boyz, and Boondox. Nobody else in the entertainment industry has worked as hard as ICP to keep their fans happy, and to provide value in the form of entertainment. If you can’t think of any other reason to respect them, at least respect their work ethic. |
|
Having been in the business for almost 20 years, ICP will not hesitate to tell you that being independent is the way to go. Stop waiting for a handout, and go make your own success. If you hate Insane Clown Posse, then this story should be even more inspirational for you than for others. All it takes to be highly successful is an unwavering determination to make it happen, and the ability to network with people. Put your product into the hands of your target audience, and let them spread the word. Stop waiting for something to change in your life, and make the change yourself.

I found your site on Google and read a few of your other entires. Nice Stuff. I’m looking forward to reading more from you.
@ Rick
Thanks for stopping by! I hope to read your opinion about some of the other things I have written.
Hi Trey
I have a feeling that ICP is not my cup of tea.
What I got out of this is that whatever your thing is you have to go for it. And you can find success in anything that you do, just get off your behind and get moving.
Thank you,

Imperfect Action is better than No Action
Giovanna Garcia’s most recent blog post..Face your fear! You will to be rewarded.
@ Giovanna
Yes, that’s a good message to take from this article. The main ingredient for success is to take action, just like what you speak about. Thanks for reading!
I think it is quite useful that you have brought up some of the points of their success, as opposed to just commenting about their releases. This gets to the heart of what they did to obtain their position. Purchasing time on MTV, in order to make a point about not being featured, takes much boldness, as MTV could have(and might have) gave them less opportunities due to that. Boldness is something that might be frowned upon by a media conglomerate, but can also appeal to numerous viewers of the situation.
Armen Shirvanian’s most recent blog post..MasterMind Matrix Chart Review
Trey – Nice break down of ICP and their style. I think ignorance and prejudice makes people immediately hate them and their music. I personally don’t like their music, but that is just a personal taste issue. I prefer MudVayne, Disturbed and NIN style.
Yes, there will always be an audience for anything if the artist works hard enough and is determined to “make it”.
Jannie Funster’s most recent blog post..Bristles on a stick
@ Armen
ICP has been snubbed by Radio and MTV for the majority of their career, which I would guess is because of a combination of their “niche” audience, and the fact that they won’t play ball with the corporations. I guarantee that they didn’t get a low price for their ad time.
And yes, this month I’ve focused on three artists who went out and made their own success in three diferent mediums. Kevin Smith (Movies), Stephanie Meyers (Books), and ICP (Music). What I’m trying to do is reinforce how if you want to make it big in whatever venture you have, it’s always possible. Thanks for commenting!
@ FupDuckTV
I’m glad that there’s some people on this planet such as yourself that can dislike a band, and not make a big deal over it. Yes, the reason a lot of people hate them is because they’re more of a band that takes a long time to appreciate, as opposed to being a band that will impress you on first listen. Thanks for commenting!
@ Jannie
Thanks for coming by! Hard work and determination is often the difference between a struggling artist and an over-rated artist.
This was surprizingly a good article.

Thanks for the praise! It means a lot.
I also wanted to point out that the reaction of this article in the juggalo community has been overwhelmingly positive. This article has been posted over at http://www.juggalonews.com and has received praise almost completely across the board. Thank a ton for that!
thank you very much. that has to be the most thoughtful article about icp, written by a non juggalo, that i have ever read. i dont usually write comments, because its not worth the energy, but i felt i had to this time. again thank you and much family love
Dude. This was the best article I’ve ever read about ICP and the like. They have been one of my favorite rap artists for a few years now for the exact reasons you stated. Thank you for posting an article about them that was actually worth reading.
By the way, the link to this was posted on http://www.faygoluvers.net
Much Clown Love Trey. I got a friend named trey in my school too.
Hey are you a juggalo? Just curious, or did you do your homework on ICP? I’ve been down for about 6 yrs, and I picked up on the whole storytelling thing pretty quick. They help me deal with alot of my daily issues. Great article.
MCL

@ Merle
Thanks for the comment, but I’m not a non-juggalo. I’ve been down since 97. I’m not shy about this on my Myspace and Facebook pages. The only reason I don’t flaunt it on here is because it’s not relevant to my business. However, I have no problem telling people that I’m a juggalo when they ask me. Thanks for coming by!
@ Willis Ax
It was my pleasure to try to reach out to the people who blindly hate ICP for no good reason. There’s a lot that people can learn from them, even if they hate the music. Let me thank YOU for taking the time to show your appreciation. It means a lot coming from you, and everyone else for that matter.
@ PDM22
Like I said above, I’m a juggalo. I agree about the storytelling thing. The way that ICP references Robert Frost, Edgar Allen Poe, The Bible, and numerous other literary sources, it should be obvious that they are telling a story. In fact, they’ve admitted many times that what they are doing is storytelling. And yes, their stories are great metaphors for life. Thanks for commenting!
Maybe it’s because I am an Aussie, but I’ve never heard of them, but then after Googling them and listening to the Tower, I reckon it’s more because I don’t listen to that style of music. What can I say except that I doubt I would listen to it again.

@ Sire
Eh, “The Tower” isn’t on my Top 10 List of Suggestions For First ICP Impression. However, the music isn’t for everyone. Like I said, the point of the article wasn’t to debate the quality of their music, as opposed to simply offering another (positive) way to look at them. Thanks for having an open mind though! Take care.
@ jeremy
No, thank you for checking out my article and giving feedback. MCL.
Hey, that’s cool, but I reckon those guys must of liked it as it was the first one I came across on their site. I notice they like to swear a fair bit as well.
Sire’s most recent blog post..Translation Of A Big Night Out
Yeah, the swearing is, in my opinion, a way to capitalize on the anti-authority, and rebellious feelings of young people. They’ll go to the music with a mindset of finding an escape from life, and over time will start to realize that there’s a lot of positive lessons to learn from the music. They probably don’t swear nearly as much in real life as they do in their music and in interviews.
The whole point is that ICP are artists in their own right, with their own fan base, and a well estabilshed business. The whole ICP/Eminem thing is so old.
I don’t see why folks love to holler about “ICP sucks.” Don’t listen to them, don’t waste your breath mentioning them, simple as that.
Good article
It’s nice to see someone with an open mind talking about ICP instead of haters talking about how much they suck and how much they hate them. However you look at it, they have worked very hard for what they have, they didn’t sell out, and they are promoting a good message. It just comes out differently than most people would expect and they’re so closed minded that they automatically think of them as stupid or lame or even the worst label i’ve heard which is satanic or evil.
ICP are simply saying what other people won’t. They are also uniting people with their music and making us a family. They remind us that no matter what our differences are, we’re all human beings and we should just stop hating.
-MMFWCL-
your article was very well written and thought out so i have posted it up on my website
http://www.wikednews.tk
i hope to see more writing from you because i like juggalos and kevin smith.
well all i can say is this is probably one of the best things i have read in a while i love icp i am a juggalo and to be honest i dont like to read shit unless i have to i loved this it is honest if u want it go get it and the comment about em crushing icp kinda funny who is still puttin it down and who aint o ya they also left that beef in the past axemurder boyz and icp and em were all bowling togather about a year and a half agoe so there it is all about the most evil thing in the world money u gotta make it and both of them did o and icp still is so ya em had d 12 but icp has twiztid blaze abk amb djclay the roc it is all about the money who has it icp look they have 2 movies about to have 3 so ya there maken money and they got my money when something new comes out so ya peace the denver juggalo livin in kansas mcl
Well written article. Thank you for capitalizing on the professional aspect of the group. Being a Juggalo, it’s obvious you know what you are talking about (name-drops and such), but you didn’t let it take away from the facts. ICP’s struggle throughout the media is no secret, but it was nice to read an article telling “their side”, so to speak. Well done sir!
MCL
I really enjoyed reading your article. I feel that it will give the world outside of the icp fanbase (juggalos) another way to see who the band and their followers are.It is rare to see articles like this so I am obliged to comment this one due to its widely open minded point of view. I respect everything that you have to say about the band and the juggalos. I myself am a juggalo so I appreciate what you have to say.
-Cody
Just wanted to stop by and say THANK YOU for this non-biased and informative article about ICP, FINALLY!! I have been hearing and reading so much BS about how ICP is the cause of violent murders, and stupid people going crazy. But you hit the nail right on the head when you said that their violent and fearful music is just a source of NON-VIOLENT release for Juggalos. I have been trying to convey this message to my non-juggalo friends for quite sometime now. I am a “Juggalette”, but I’m also a Mom, and a productive member of society, so I also especially appreciate your outlook on their work ethic. If you haven’t already, I suggest you read Violent-J’s book, “Behind the Paint.” He talks about all the hard work they put into creating the band and the lable in the early years when they were just crazy kids in clown paint!! Thanks again for your intelligence, and I look foward to reading more of your open-minded articles. MUCH CLOWN LOVE!!!!
I applaud this article Trey. I just wish that someone could write an article that could make non-listeners realize that not all juggalos and juggalettes are out there beating people down and killing people like the media seems to be doing across the country. I appreciate you taking the time to write this, and I have respect for you for pointing out why I listen to ICP and all the artists on psychopathic records. MCL
E
Very good article! Its nice to see a writer who did their research, and has a open mind about things that other people close out.
Keep writting bro, I can accually read your articles.. lol
Nice article man. I’ve been listening to ICP and underground rap for over 10 years, and in that time I have noticed a whole other group of haters. And they are the people who have never heard any ICP song and basically have no clue about them except for the fact that they say bad words. A hater without a cause if you will.
well i read this artical and i was suprised that it was positive one about them, most people choose to ignore the fact that they have truly done it on their own and made their own way into the “industry” if you can call where they are the industry. I myself am a rapper in the same vain of ICP and i owe them, as well as other people who do the “wicked shit” alot of credit for what they have done and what hey have helped start (lets not forget Esham now). I read Violent J’s book and it has become pretty much a how to promote guide. It reaffermed beleifes that i already had and just made me want to make it more and more. I do wickeed music and now, it almost isnt good to like ICP , its like people forgot that they are the ones who paved the way for them to do this type of music. Im not a juggalo rapper, i just do Wicked Music. But as long as i live ill always give the Insane Clown Posse the credit they deserve in music, business, and work ethic. They are a major influence of my music and my life. I live in Flint MI , about 65 miles north of Detroit, so i have known about these guys for a long , long time, and i wouldent change it. From the 1st record untill now, thanks for paveing the way for us, and thanks to you for writing a positive artical about them.
thanks

this is the best article i have read! You nailed what attracted all of us juggalos an lettes to it. Thank you!
MCL
Its nice to have a positive artical about icp now all we need is more about us. Juggalos are classified as a gang now and its dumb i dont go out there and “bang” icp or juggalo and the gang members that are juggalos keep icp out of there gang life. We as a family need to watch ourselfs in what we do because if you do something stupid everyone blames juggalos and icp. So lets stand tall together and make a better name for juggalos world wide.
@ AnDy
I went ahead and deleted the comment that you were replying to. I’m all for free speech, but I’m not interested in letting people use MY website to spread hate. Thanks for commenting!
@ Faygo
That’s the general idea that I wanted to get across in this article. Look at how ICP has accomplished so much with their career without looking for a handout. They didn’t go back to their nine-to-five jobs when they couldn’t get a record deal. They went out and made their dreams happen! Plus, they have done a lot of good with their career in giving the juggalos a way to unite, like you said. Thanks for commenting!
@ wn orcus
Thanks for promoting my article. I appreciate it! If you liked this article, I have a few articles planned for March that you’ll like as well.
@ timothy
Thanks for sharing. It’s not all about the money. It’s about providing value to your fanbase. ICP has done that in the form of giving them hope for the future, and a lifestyle to follow. ICP showed thousands of juggalos that they don’t a handout to achieve success. You can be successful through hard work and the power of art!
@ Collin
Thanks! I do know my stuff when it comes to ICP. I wasn’t interested in trying to get people to listen to the music. I was just wanting people to take a minute out of their day, and acknowledge that ICP accomplished something significant.
@ Cody Pillips
I know that articles like this are rare. Everyone wants to play up the negativity angle nowadays, and that’s one of the reasons so many people are depressed. I chose to highlight the positive aspects of ICP’s career. Thanks for your kind words!
@ Katie
I have indeed read Violent J’s book, “Behind The Paint”. It was an awesome book, and one that EVERY musician should read. You’re right when you say that ICP probably prevents more violence than they cause, but the media has never been good at looking at things objectively. The world isn’t black and white. Thanks for commenting!
@ Eric Krampitz
Thanks for your kind words. One things for sure, it’s not going to be one article, or one album, or one anything that’s going to change people’s opinions about juggalos. It’s going to take more positivity and enlightenment. Remember the Shangri-La era? We need juggalos to focus on THAT level of positivity again.
@ MagikMusik
Believe me, I’m going to keep writing. I’m not going anywhere.
Thanks for your kind words!
@ Kyle Willard
Some of the haters might have listened to a little bit of ICP, but that doesn’t mean they know what they’re talking about. It takes TIME to understand what ICP is doing. You can’t just listen to a few minutes of music and understand it. Thanks for sharing!
@ Trajik
I’ve heard of you! I didn’t even dip into the subject of the whole culture that has sprung up around this type of music. I also take NOTHING away from Esham. Esham is a huge influence on me, and I intend on writing about him in the future.
And within that culture, you’re right… people have forgotten about ICP. This article was definitely targeted at those people too. I can totally understand if someone doesn’t like ICP’s music, but there’s no reason to not respect them for what they’ve accomplished. NO REASON. Thanks for sharing!
@ chris
Thanks for commenting! I really appreciate it.
@ mack
My website is more geared to entertainment commentary, so I’m not quite sure that I want to write about the juggalos. I do agree that the media frenzy around juggalos is unfair, and just an attempt to censor people and their lifestyles. The best way to create a better future is to focus on the good, instead of the bad. Thanks for commenting!
MCL to all of you!
“It takes TIME to understand what ICP is doing.”
Soooooo true! My brother would listen to ICP’s “Riddlebox” album for hours on end and I HATED it. Took about a year for me to actually LISTEN to it and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Their music definitely isn’t for everyone, and that’s a very hard concept for most people to grasp.
Great article.

I never really judged ICP, I just chose to be ignorant about who they are. My son is very much into the ICP culture and thanks to your post,I am now abit more enlightened and less likely to pass criticism. No doubt my son will be very pleased! :~)

Hi Trey
Good to see this article attracting a lot of positive attention. Not sure if ICP get much publicity at all outside the USA .. I confess I’d not heard of them. Checked out a couple of their tracks on YouTube after reading this and will check them out more (liked what I heard first off).
I’ve also not understood why people take such strong positions on music. Love it or hate it, music is always about personal taste so why get so uptight about it? I mean it’s not like supporting a sports team – it’s more like taste in food. I detest cucumber … but I’m hardly going to start a hate campaign. And I guess there’d not be much interest in a fan club either.
Ian Peatey’s most recent blog post..A very stupid question
i really like how you didnt focus on just saying that you like icp and eveyone else sucks but you actually broke it down into emotions that they give out in their music that was awesome and for the people who think icp sucks dont listen to them its as simple as that
thanks for the article it was the first good one ive seen in a long time
MCl
I saw ths link posted on Faygoluvers.net and they were bragging on you so I had to come check it out. I gotta say it really pleases me to actually see an article that is positive, intelligent, and so well presented. And to see all of the people leaving their comments and it’s not just a bunch of hate. I’ve been down for a LONG time and this is a first for me. Thanks Trey, I am looking forward to your posts in the future.

the guy that wrote this finaly sumone with good taste and beleaves the hate towards us and icp and the lable has gone too far ppl hate them for the wrong reasons idk y but there would be times ppl ask me on myspace im chatrooms whut music i listen too i tellem then they start the word hate on me and all this crap but anyways and see the love we have for icp and the lable u will never ever see that in any other rap group or artists fanbase but if u seen the thing on faygoluvers.net that juggalos r #3 as the worst fans all i got to say is there smoking too much crack to say that kind of crap MCL TO THE GUY WHO WROTE THE ARTICAL MCL HOMIE
@ Eric Engel
That’s true. You can’t just hear ICP’s music to understand it. You have to LISTEN to it. When you open your mind to it, you at least gain an appreciation for it, regardless of whether or not it’s your type of music. Honestly, I don’t get into ICP’s music quite as much as I did when I was 13, but even if I stopped liking it altogether, I would still respect the hell out of them. Thanks for coming by!
@ Henie
It’s a small world isn’t it? I didn’t expect you to have much to relate with in this post, but it just goes to show you that you never know how you’re going to connect with someone. I’m glad that I was able to show you something new!
@ Ian
ICP has a good deal of popularity in Europe. As a matter of fact, they tried to open a leg of their record label, Psychopathic, in Europe a few years ago. It’s not just a local thing.
I like your analogy of personal taste. As you know, I feel very strongly that people should learn to respect each other’s taste in entertainment more than they do. I’m not asking anyone to start liking ICP’s music. I’m just trying to get them to question their blind hatred for them. Thanks for your comment!
@ Harlan
Thanks for the comment. It was only recently that I realized that the reason ICP speaks to our souls is because they touch on the basic aspects of human emotions. I never had a simple way to explain their music until I came to that conclusion.
@ Brandon Parris
Thanks for the kind words. I’ve been down for a long time too, and have never witnessed this kind of positivity on the net, so I wanted to try to create it. Just know that I’ve only deleted one comment, and haven’t moderated ANY of the others. This positivity is genuine!
@ MeatBall
You’re right. The hate has gone too far. People don’t have to like ICP’s music, but why do they get so hateful? It’s ridiculous. MCL right back to you, and everyone else!
A real Nice article. I love the way you came at ICP in a different way that I seen sence Behind the Paint. You should make a YouTube video about this. lol.
MCL from southern cali
Finally a article not bashing ICP, but instead pointing out a lot of the things which make them ideal as music artists. And it’s funny, because while most people hate them, ICP gets about 10 million a year, each, so they don’t give a fuck. They made money from doing what they love, and they continue to do so.
@ SkullFuck
Thanks for commenting! A YouTube version of this article is in the works, but in the meantime, if someone else wants to create a YouTube video for this, they have my permission as long as they give me credit, a link back to this website, and don’t change the content.

Thanks for your comment. It is true that ICP is fat paid, so they’re doing something very right. And you’re right, they made money doing what they love, which is what I hope everyone who frequents this site goes on to do!
