Lindsay Lohan: Role Model?

Reckless Youth…

As of this writing, Lindsay Lohan is only twenty-two years old, and has appeared in a mere twelve theatrical movies and a handful of television appearances.  Yet, people can’t seem to get enough information about her.  Everywhere you look, people are either talking about her, or she’s on the cover of some tabloid newspaper.

Lindsay Lohan grew up in front of the cameras, as a child model for print ads, which eventually took her to regular roles on soap operas, leading to her movie career, which she is most popular for.  Her movie career started less than eleven years ago with the remake of The Parent Trap, and it seems that since then, people have been unable to stop talking about her.

Well known on the celebrity party circuit, Lindsay has become notorious for heavy alcohol use, cocaine use, automobile crashes and public nudity.  She has been in rehab twice (as of this writing) and has been in prison before.  Not to mention that she suffers from an eating disorder just like half of the brain-dead actresses in Hollywood.

I Say “No More!”

We need to stop encouraging young people who act like this.  Lohan has admitted in the past to having such an eating disorder.  This type of behavior is not cool, and in any sane and sensible society, a celebrity with an eating disorder would have trouble finding work due to being a lousy role model.  We need to stop putting these people up on a pedestal, and stop instilling the idea into our youth that women are supposed to be rail thin.

However, with all the controversy that Lindsay Lohan has attracted, very little of it has to do with her having an eating disorder.  A lot of it is centered around the fact the media was there to cover every minute of her rebellious years as a young adult/teenager.  Add on to the fact that Lohan has the kind of money, and the setting to engage in a full blown party lifestyle, a lot of people are of the opinion that any other teenager would have acted the same way if they were in her shoes.

Don’t Give Me That “Party Phase” Crap!

Yes it is true that a lot of young adults go through a party phase, but it is not true that this represents all teenagers, or even most.  Not every young man or woman would be tempted to binge drink or do drugs if they had a steady stream of money.  In fact, a lot of people would want to invest the money, or buy things with it.  My point.  A lack of money is not the only deterrent teenagers have from living a party lifestyle.  Plus, many teenagers live a similar party lifestyle and get looked down upon much worse than Lohan does.  The difference?  People are willing to forgive Lohan because she is pretty and/or famous.

People can debate whether or not hatred for Lindsay represents our self hatred all they want, but the argument changes when filming for a movie has to be delayed due to her claiming “exhaustion” and then showing up at a nightclub the same day.  The argument changes when she admits to being a recovering alcoholic, with a court ordered probation, and being photographed having a drink.  Her fans aren’t forging her for being human.  Her fans are forgiving her for being grossly irresponsible.  And if these fans truly cared for her, they would expect better of her, especially being a role model for young women.

So What’s Your Opinion?
