Thanks for stopping by, and I'm flattered that you would consider me to be a pro blogger. Yes, spam is bad for your site, and bad for your readers. The less spam there is out there, the better off the blogosphere will be!

Hi Trey,

First time to visit your blog here, and it was my privilege to learn from a pro blogger just like you. My perception is...you have a great gift on writing, so keep up the good work. I do delete those spam comments also and sometimes it's annoying to your readers.

Yeah, that's pretty much how my spam inbox looks. I'm pretty sure a lot of that stuff comes from bots, and not people. And I completely agree with you that good comments are what makes blogging great. Thanks for dropping by!

I have actually noticed that most of my blogs comments are spam. It is very few and far between that I actually get a good post that even makes sense. Many times it is just a bunch of random letters mixed together and usernames that don't even make sense. I always block or delete these so I am not sure why these people continue to post junk to a quality blog. It is very irritating. I actually hope that more people will comment though as that is what makes a blog interesting and interactive. Thanks for the article.

Thanks for the kind words. Without a doubt, commenting has been my #1 reason for improved traffic. I only wish I had more time to comment on other blogs, but my working schedule is SO hectic right now, I barely have enough time to create content for my blog.

And I COMPLETELY agree with you about the big blogs. I'm going to write an article about that in the next few weeks. I get so tired of seeing everyone lower their integrity and suck up to the big bloggers.

@ Ian

I think that you leave good comments. As I said in the article, I feel that comments should be relevant, not necessarily useful. Of course, relevance can be debated, but to me, relevance has nothing in common with cookie cutter kissy-faced praise.

And no, there's no shame in using comments to promote your blog. That's pretty much why we all comment. However, we need to make sure that we aren't coming across as selfish. We need to make sure we are leaving good comments, because it looks bad for us when we don't. Thanks for commenting!

@ Tycoon Blogger

Hey, thanks a lot for linking to my post, it means a lot! Personally, I've only deleted a handful of comments that weren't spam on my blog. One was from a person who was just trying to start an argument, and the rest were from an ignorant commentator who wasn't even reading the articles, yet felt he knew enough about my opinions to insult me. I don't have high standards for my comments, but I will not hesitate to delete them if they fall below those standards.

Hi Trey

Good advice here. I read blogs I enjoy and comment when I have something to say (whether it's useful or not is up to the reader of the comment, not me). I find it great as a way to network but also to see what others are writing about, how they design and manage their blog and how they build up their readership. All useful learning for me, as well meeting some great and interesting people.

And .. it's also useful for building traffic. I notice a strong correlation between how active I am visiting other blogs and how many are visiting mine. I don't think there's any shame in reading and commenting as a way to build your own traffic. It's part of the blogging world.

Way to go Trey, and I'm not just saying that because of the link luv either. Ever since I've learned the importance of commenting, not only because of the SEO advantages but because of the community building aspect, I have tried many posts to try and show this to those who happen to land on my blog.

I love the way you have broken all the important points down and explained each one in such a way that even the newest newbie could understand it. If anyone leaves this post not knowing how important it is to comment and to do it properly, well they just ain't going to make it as a blogger.

I rarely read blogs from the big boys (Darren Rowse etc) these days, not because their articles suck, but because most of the comments are drivel that just try to suck up to the blogger. I hate it when people do that and so I don't put myself through it.
