Working A Dream Job…

Well, today I finished a two year stint at the local television station here in Cape Girardeau, MO.  Working for KFVS-12 has been an interesting experience to say the least.

Working on Heartland News was always a childhood dream of mine.  I moved to the Heartland in 1989, and have been watching Heartland News on KFVS-12 since then, and to be able to work alongside some of the same people that I grew up watching was an amazing experience, and is one that I wouldn’t have traded for anything.  Likewise, to be able to be a part of a team that consists of so much up and coming talent is humbling, to put it mildly.  Not to mention that so many people there have a downright intimidating work ethic and a blinding passion to deliver the news to the viewers at home. And to my amazement, not one of the TV anchors that I met had an ego.  Every single one of them were down to earth, friendly, and considered themselves to be part of a team, as opposed to the “star” of the show, or something similar.

My Decision To Leave

Leaving KFVS-12 was not a decision that I took lightly, and I have taken some criticism in my social circle for doing so.  And even though my last few weeks with the company have been incredibly surreal, and the fact that I’m no longer with the company has yet to sink in for me,  I know that it was the best choice for me.  Over the course of the year, I’ve slowly came to the realization that Broadcasting is not the career path that I want to pursue.  I simply have little to no passion for it.  The truth is that I want to go into business for myself, producing entertainment in the form of music, video, and writing.  And while KFVS-12 is a wonderful place to work if you’re pursuing a business career, it can be quite a demanding job if you’re trying to start an online business in your spare time.

And now I’ll have a lot more free time to pursue my goals.  Don’t worry about me though, because I had another job lined up before I left KFVS-12, that will be less demanding of my time.  So, over the last several weeks, I’ve been working two jobs, which is why my writing on this blog has suffered.  The timing for my departure is perfect, because I’ve got huge plans for 2010, and now I have a month to prepare for the new year.  But enough about that.

List Of Shout Outs

Anyway, I just wanted to send a shout out to a few of the people that I worked with in no particular order.  There’s no possible way that I can remember everyone though, so this is just the tip of the iceberg:

Bob Reeves, it was an honor to get to know you.  KFVS-12 won’t be the same when you finally decide to retire.  Lauren Keith, thanks for putting me on TV!  You’re one of the most talented anchors I’ve seen, locally or nationally.  Don’t ever lose your ability to liven up a room.  Kyle Aufdenberg, you’ve got a great career ahead of you.  One day you’ll be highly successful and I’m glad that I’ll be able to say I knew you back in the day.  Mike Wunderlich, to this date, you’re the best boss that I’ve ever had, and probably the hardest working one too!  Noland Cook, don’t ever change!  You’re the type of person that gets along with everyone, and I wish I had even a small percentage of that quality.   Todd Richards, you’re one of the nicest guys I’ve ever worked with, and you’re so good at talking sports that you were actually able to keep my interest from time to time… and I hate most sports!  Derek Dickerson, watching you direct the news is awe-inspiring.  You’re unbelievably talented.  Kim Merritts, you’re an asset to the company, and your consistently high standards are an inspiration for me to always do my best at what I choose to do.  Jim Burns, I’m stoked that you appreciated my work.  Thanks for the support.  Brian Alworth, I’ve always considered you to be very good at what you do.  Weather is never boring when you’re on screen, and that’s a difficult task to achieve. John Dissauer, the public doesn’t even realize how hard you work behind the scenes.  You’re one of the most passionate workers I’ve ever seen in my life.  Crystal Britt, I always enjoyed working with you because you’re so easy going.  Good luck with your baby-on-the-way!  Jared Toney, you’re one of those people who makes life easier for the people that you work with.  You’re highly responsible and you always seem to do what’s right.  Mike Payne, it’s always refreshing to work with someone who takes pride in their work.  You’re very good at what you do.  TJ Smith, who consistently produces some of the very best graphics and video that I’ve ever seen, and on a seemingly daily basis.  Kudos to you!  Jeff Mulligan, you have an amazing eye for detail.  No mistake gets by you, no matter how small or trivial it is.  Dave Horn, your dry and witty sense of humor will be missed by me.  Pat Mason, you’re another irreplaceable asset to the company, and it was always impossible for me to be in a bad mood with you around.  And Greg Webb, I never knew what was going to come out of your mouth next, but it was almost always hilarious.  You’re also highly skilled at producing the news, and I always knew that the newscast would be low-stress and smooth with you in the drivers seat.

I’d also like to send a shout out to everyone that I forgot to mention.  You all rock at what you do, I just don’t have a comment for all of you.  lol.

Thank You Everyone For Two Amazing Years!
